expected impact of the project on the development of new knowledge relevant to the scientific area, vocation, economy or society
The theoretical and methodological contribution to the pilgrimage studies field, but also beyond, will be mostly from our ethnographic methodological approach of embodied experience research and more-than-representational approach on a very specific context of maritime pilgrimage seascape. This approach is just being developed within pilgrimage studies and so far in pilgrimage studies scarcely present. Moreover, pilgrimage research within seascape context does not exist, as far as we know.
This project will also contribute to theory within the field of pilgrimage studies by integrating a focus on behaviors observed during pilgrimage events with a focus on the embeddedness of these particular pilgrimages in everyday lives of pilgrims, tourists, local population and returned migrants. By considering these interrelated analytical questions, we will contribute to the efforts to transcend the communitas – contestation controversy in the anthropology of pilgrimage.
So far, different disciplines approached pilgrimages in their own particular ways using the results and ideas from the other disciplines, but there was no such joint research of several disciplines that go beyond social sciences and humanities (geography and economic studies in this project) to try to contribute to the field.
Creating applicable knowledge and producing results that local and regional community can apply in their everyday life, especially local stakeholders such as hostel owners, tourist offices, craftsmen and artists.
Producing transferable best practices and guidelines for making maritime pilgrimage a sustainable practice for future generations of local population and visitors will be especially important and useful for societies that depend on tourism industry, such as is the case with Croatian economy.
